The Volcanic Vineyards of the Azores
Stories shaped by the ocean.
For Marine Migrations, we travelled to the Azores, an island chain in the middle of the Atlantic where life is defined by the ocean. Its currents shape everything, from the wildlife that passes through each season to the people who have learned to live alongside it.
Among them is The Azores Wine Company.
Founded by António Maçanita and his partners, the winery is built on a simple ambition: to preserve and rediscover the unique wine culture of the islands. For generations, vines have grown here in black volcanic rock, protected from the Atlantic winds by thousands of hand-built stone walls. It is a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world, where every harvest is the result of patience, resilience and a close relationship with nature.
During our visit, António shared how the ocean continues to shape both the land and the wines they produce. The volcanic soil, salty air and changing weather are part of the identity of every bottle.
Rather than forcing the landscape to adapt, they work with it.
That mindset resonated with us.
At Law of The Sea, we're drawn to people whose lives are influenced by the water and how they see the world. Whether it's a diver documenting marine life, a fisherman reading the tides or a winemaker cultivating vines on volcanic cliffs, each story begins with the same source: the ocean.
The Azores reminded us that movement isn't only found in the waves. It's present in traditions passed from one generation to the next, in landscapes shaped over centuries and in people who continue to build their lives around the rhythm of the Atlantic.
Those encounters became an important part of Marine Migrations.
Not simply as the backdrop for a collection, but as a reminder that the strongest stories are often found by following the currents.
